  1. Acid-Based Stains
  2. Water-Based Stains
  3. Concrete Stain Recommendations

Acid-Based Stains

The last step involves sealing the floor with a clear coating to help increase its shine and chemical and wear resistance. Additives can be added to the coating to improve its slip resistance.
Acid-based stains are a good choice when you want the color to penetrate deep into the concrete. These stains are comprised of water, acid soluble metal salts and hydrochloric acid. When these stains are poured onto the concrete, they chemically react with each other. This chemical reaction allows the metal salts to etch deep into the surface. This results in a permanent color that cannot be removed and will not chip, stain or fade. Once dry, the color tends to be semi-translucent and can resemble a marble-like surface. Acid-based stains are typically available in brown, tan, blue-green and various shades of orange and red.

Acid Stain Installation

Acid stain installation is fairly simple. The stain is applied across the surface of the concrete and left to dry for at least five hours. During that time, the acid stain interacts with the concrete surface to create a permanent bond that cannot be removed.

Once the stain has completely dried, the residual chemicals along with any loose etchings must be rinsed away with water. If the chemical is left on the floor along with etchings, the sealant will not adhere properly to the floor.

The last step involves sealing the floor with a clear coating to help increase its shine and chemical and wear resistance. Additives can be added to the coating to improve its slip resistance.

  • Benefits of Acid-Based Stains
  • Permanent
  • Won’t Chip, Fade or Erode
  • Relatively Simple to Install
  • Acid-Based Stain Considerations
  • Fewer Colors Available Than for Water-Based Stains
  • Must be Thoroughly Rinsed and Cleaned Prior to Installing Sealant
  • Takes Longer to Dry Than Water-Based Stains
  • Results Vary Depending on the Condition and Composition of the Concrete

Water-Based Stains

Water-based stains are a mixture of epoxy, acrylic, color and water. Like acid-based stains, water-based stains are spread evenly across the surface of the concrete and left to dry for a certain period of time, usually anywhere from a few minutes to a couple hours.

It’s important to understand that there is no reaction between the water-based stain and the concrete. Instead, the stain penetrates into the pores of the concrete and adheres to the surface. This results in a stain that penetrates less deeply than acid. However, many homeowners and building owners love these stains because they are more uniform in color, and the range of colors is much broader. Common water-based colors include white, black, gray, metallic colors, red, yellow and blue as well as many others.

Water-Based Stain Installation

Water-based stains are applied evenly to the surface of the concrete and allowed to penetrate the concrete pores and dry. Since there is no chemical reaction, this stain behaves a lot like paint or water-based wood stains.

The cleaning process after the stain has dried is much simpler than with acid-based stains. Usually, a good sweeping and mopping is all that is needed to prepare the newly stained surface for sealant. Once the floor is completely dry, the sealant is applied in order to increase wear resistance and resistance to spills. Additives can be added to the sealant to help improve slip resistance.

  • Benefits of Water-Based Stains
  • Available in Dozens Of Colors
  • Colors Can Be Mixed to Create Custom Colors
  • Environmentally Friendly
  • Takes Less Time to Dry
  • Easy to Install
  • Water-Based Stain Considerations
  • Doesn’t Penetrate the Concrete as Deeply
  • May Wear Over Time
  • Results Vary Depending on the Condition and Composition of the Concrete
